Keep up to date with Coates Associates
Coates sponsor Ricardo Christie
Published 30 June 2015
Coates Associates are proud to be supporting Ricardo Christie during his maiden year on the world championship surfing tour.
The championship tour is made up of the world’s top 32 surfers and comprises 11 contests held all over the world.
Ricardo qualified for the championship tour via his 16th place finish on the 2014 qualifying circuit (feeder tour). He is the second only New Zealander to qualify for the top tour, the other being Gisborne local Maz Quinn in 2001.
The top finishing 22 surfers at year end retain their spot on the championship tour, with the remainder being replaced by the top finishers on the qualifying circuit. After the Fiji event Ric is sitting in 26th place on the championship tour, with 8,450 points. The 22nd place surfer (Adam Melling) is sitting on 9,750 points so there is plenty of opportunity for Ric to get back above the cut.
The WSL (World Surf League) has introduced a yellow jersey system similar to the Tour de France, where the number 1 ranked surfer wears yellow in each event. Twice this year Ric has come up against the world number one (Filipe Toledo in Margaret River and Adriano De Souza in Brazil) and managed the win.
The next contest is to be held at J-Bay in South Africa. Coverage is available on Sky Sports pop up channels or at the WSL website www.worldsurfleasgue.com. We hope everyone has a chance to watch and cheer Ric on!
